Grauman's Chinese Theatre Hollywood, California |

As the legend goes, preserving the hand and footprints of celebrities in cement at Grauman's Chinese Theatre on Hollywood Boulevard began by accident when master showman Sid Grauman accidentally stepped into the wet concrete while the theatre was being constructed. On April 30th, 1927, two of the theatre's co-owners, Mary Pickford and Douglas Fairbanks, added their footprints - starting one of Hollywood's greatest traditions. Probably the world's most famous theatre, Grauman's Chinese opened on May 18th, 1927, with the premiere of Cecil B. DeMille's epic "King of Kings," and has been the site of countless Hollywood events since. It is estimated over four million tourists visit the theatre every year, perhaps hoping to catch a glimpse of their favorite star at a premiere - or to see their cement casts in the theatre's forecourt. Clark Gable, Jimmy Stewart, Rita Hayworth, Cary Grant, Eddie Murphy, the original "Star Trek" crew, and characters from the "Star Wars" films have all left impressions of their feet and hands in cement here. |

Many movies have been shot here as well, including "A Star is Born" (1937), "Singin' in the Rain" (1952), "Blazing Saddles" (1974), "Speed" (1994), "The Majestic" (2001), and Mike Jittlov's "The Wizard of Speed and Time" (1988). The theatre was also the host of the 1949 Academy Awards ceremony. When Ted Mann purchased the theatre in 1973, it was renamed Mann's Chinese - and remained that way until the beginning of the 21st Century and the opening of the new Hollywood & Highland complex next door. Around that time, Mann Theatres removed their sign and returned Grauman's name to the historic theatre. 26 July 2005 |
