"Jaws" was the first movie to reach the $100 million mark About a quarter of the movie was photographed from the level of the ocean to give viewers the feel of treading water. Quint's boat is named "Orca." The Orca whale (also called the Killer whale) is a known shark enemy. The "track forward, zoom out" shot where the background narrows as Brody realizes someone has been attacked by a shark is a reverse of the "zoom in and track backwards" shot to make the background suddenly widen. It was originally used by Irmin Roberts to represent the dizzying heights in"Vertigo" (1958). Steven Spielberg named the shark in the film "Bruce" -- after his lawyer. |
